Regrets...
I've had a few.
But then again,
Too few to mention!
--"My Way",
written by Paul Anka
When I hear that song, I think of Frank Sinatra, and sometimes Elvis or Sid Vicious -- all of whom have been known to perform, in their own unique manner, that wonderful song. Wonderful because -- though I don't always enjoy hearing it, I've heard it so much -- the song is a wonderful personal anthem. That's something we all need: a personal anthem. A song that praises our individuality; a mark of devotion to oneself. After all, they say you're going to have a helluva time loving anyone else unless you've first learned to love yourself, right?

This is not to replace your love for your God, or your spouse, or your family. I'm simply saying that we all need to give ourselves a bit more self-love at this time of year. (No, not that type of self-love !) Too many of us beat up on ourselves throughout the year, and then nearly destroy ourselves at year's end. No wonder there are so many suicides during the Holidays; the messages bombarding us are to Buy Buy Buy and to Give Give Give -- but what if you have nothing to give but love? If you have a dearth of that good stuff, then you'll have a bitch of a time spreading it around to your neighbors.

So be good to yourself, whether you're Christian, Pagan, Wiccan, Athiest, Hindu, Islamic, Mormon, Podcastin, or otherwise. Don't take the pills, they won't do you or anyone else any good; you'll simply miss out on the Next Big Thing (which may turn out to be Your Next Big Thing). Just do things your own way, singing that little hymn as you do so:
For what is a man,
What has he got?
If not himself,
Then he has naught.
To say the things,
He truly feels,
And not the words,
Of one who kneels.
The record shows,
I took the blows
And did it my way!

I'm compelled to post a quote, nearly any quote that has to do with writing, from Don DeLillo's Mao II. Here's the one I've chosen:
The only way to be in the world was to write himself there.

Yeah. That's a good one. As thought, it seems, by the hostage, the poet prisoner.

I seriously doubt this website -- or blog, or podcast, or whatever you consider it -- will ever meet your expectations. So don't expect anything, and it's possible you'll be pleasantly surprised.

So I'm ready to begin posting video again. I recorded some video while on vacation in the state of Washington, but only managed to post two of my recordings to this site. Perhaps I'll post some more later. For now, here's a blast from the past -- something I discovered today while browsing my Gmini camcorder's archives. Surely, this has got to be worthy of a Vloggie...

This fragment displays my view as I'm waiting for company to arrive...

I love this archived post of mine which I came across today while reviewing Something That Happened's Site Meter stats. Don't bother reading the post, though--it's not worth your while. I just came across it and had a satisfying moment of recognition and remembrance, something you'll never experience with that post--unless you've previously read it, too, which isn't likely since this blog doesn't exist within the world of known things.

Saturday, September 19, 2009: Removed the link to the DotMac.info website because the site longer exists.

I constantly find really fun and creative sites at DotMac.info, like this collection of Quicktime 360-degree panoramic images from the Panorama Backpacker, or this infrared photography by Steve Wilson. Perhaps more of these website owners have more time to create their art because they don't spend that time coding their websites.

So Steinbeck's East of Eden was chosen as the first selection in the return of Oprah's Book Club. I always knew Oprah had good taste. I tried to get mom to read East of Eden a few months ago, but she showed no interest and didn't get very far in the novel. As soon as Oprah recommended it, though...let's just say I'm not going to hear the end of it until I find her another copy. The last one came from the library -- the only copy the city of Los Angeles Public Library has -- and it looks like someone else has it now. So it's off to Half.com to see if I can get a copy.

Saturday, September 19, 2009: This post is now ancient, as far as blogs go. The post that originally followed these italicized paragraphs no longer applies since the store mentioned in the post no longer exists on my Internet radio website (though it still exists on the CafePress website). In fact, I just now removed the link that had occupied the term store .

Aside from that minor alteration, the labels I have added, and these italicized paragraphs, the post remains essentially the same.

As I'm typing this, I'm listening to my Soundgarden Radio station on Pandora Radio. The station just finished playing "Vasoline" by Stone Temple Pilots, and is now beginning to play "Yellow Ledbetter" by Pearl Jam. I'm thinking I'm going to change the station soon, but until then I'm forwarding to the next song, which turns out to be another Soundgarden song, "Somewhere". Followed by a Nirvana song, one of my favorites: "Dumb". Now it's playing an Audioslave song. Boy, I'm taking a long time to complete this message.

Original message follows:

Alot has been happening lately, but for now, let me tell you what I've been doing today:

Been updating the VoyagerRadio site most of the day, including the store, which now includes more pictures of items for sale via CafePress. (Books and other items had been listed there for months even though I had stopped selling them some time ago.)

My apologies for not updating this blog more often lately. A situation has developed at home which I need to focus on, so although I will be updating this blog as often as possible, I need to attend to this more pressing matter.

Stay tuned!

Still working on that story, although today, I must confess, did not turn out to be a work day. Believe me, though, something much more important came up. If I could do my thousand words (that's a thousand words day, according to Ms. See) right now I would, but I can't. The house needs to sleep, and I do, too. Tomorrow's an early day, if I can pry myself out of bed that early.

So I've been working on a short story, offline, for the past week, and I'm happy to report that it's coming along, although I don't know exactly how it is going to end. I have a vague notion of where it's going; or perhaps it's not so vague. Maybe that notion I have is as solid a notion as it gets. I'm thinking I may submit this story, and try to get it published somewhere, when it's done. When it's done.

Let's hope this streak continues.

Although this blog is still evolving, emerging, becoming whatever it is bound to become (or perhaps it's there already), it does have a new domain name, and that's SomethingThatHappened.com. Which cements its validity, right? Hmmm...

So write it down, remember it, come back to it, link to it, do what you may with it -- but get it out there somehow, or it will forever be that soundless tree of the web. (At the time this was originally posted, this link led to a message from vaults of the Internet Archive, "No such website exists". If you see now find results after following that link, then you must be of the future.)

Mom in the dark confines of the bar, a big, greasy, hairy man hovering over her, attempting to plant another big, greasy, hairy kiss on her lips. Mom resisting, him caving in on her, she giving in, for the moment. Him offering her some beer. Here's a bottle, take it. Go on, you can have it. Mom holding the bottle, a child with candy. Me glaring at the guy, who the fuck are you? This is my mom, buddy. Respect her.

I now have sometime-access to a wireless phone, from which I will be able to blog. Look for more spectacular and short posts here, or perhaps spectacularly short posts.

This is good news for you, I would hope, since I'll be able to post more often. I promise to make those shorter posts interesting and worthwhile, as subjective as that is.

I once posted, in this space (this right column), the following:

If I had friends they would be listed here

That particular bit o' text, that silly and idiotic phrase, was repeated a dozen or two dozen or so times and was intended to be temporary. I had been working on a project -- a new layout for this blog -- and had intended for that text to be placeholder content. That is, the text was supposed to temporarily replace the content that had previously occupied this column (which was a list of links to friends -- that is, other blogs and web sites I linked to). I didn't know what content I was going to place into that (this) space, so I placed a bunch of duplicate phrases here as a placeholder so that I would remember to fill in this space again later.

At the same time, I thought I was being cute with the heading:

NEW & IMPROVED FRIENDS!

The fact remains: I still don't know what content to put here, in this column. Links again? Pictures? Video? Audio? Ads? Oh, hell no! It hasn't come to me yet, but I'm sure it will eventually, and when it does it'll come quick and (as usual) with consequences.
